Aquarium Goldfish

Prominent for their vivid hues and elegant swimming, goldfish are among the most beloved and identifiable aquarium fish. With their unique combination of beauty and charm, they have long been a favorite among hobbyists, drawing in both novice and seasoned aquarists.

Goldfish originated in ancient China and have since developed into a variety of breeds, each with their own distinct traits and looks. These fish add a vibrant pop of color to any aquarium, whether you prefer the traditional bright orange color or one of the more exotic varieties.

Maintaining the health and happiness of goldfish requires an understanding of their care needs. Even though goldfish are resilient, giving them the proper care, food, and company will guarantee that they flourish and have long, happy lives.

Care of aquarium fish and their maintenance

For people to live comfortably, there are a few key guidelines to follow:

  1. Availability of a wide and spacious aquarium. Goldfish are active and they need a lot of space.
  2. Availability of a high-quality filter. For large aquariums, a device is purchased that pumps up to 200 liters of water per hour.
  3. A high-quality nitrogen cycle must be installed in the aquarium to analyze the content of nitrates, nitrites and ammonia in the water.
  4. The gravel being laid out must be checked for the content of sharp or metal particles so as not to harm the inhabitants of the aquarium.
  5. Decorations will decorate the aquarium, but you should also be careful with their choice. Decorations with narrow holes in which the fish can get stuck are not recommended.

Fundamental guidelines for care:

  1. The fish is fed 2 times a day, with granulated or flake food. It is recommended to chop plant food finely so that the fish can easily swallow it. To improve digestion, experts recommend eating peeled peas.
  2. Once a week 20-25% of the water is changed, and the soil is also siphoned with a siphon .
  3. It is necessary to monitor the condition of the decorations in the aquarium. Decorations or decorations with sharp corners should be removed from the aquarium or get rid of sharp corners.

Maintaining a relationship with a goldfish should be part of its care. If you make eye contact with the fish, eventually it will learn to recognize the owner’s hand during feeding time and will no longer be afraid of it.

In the event that the fish falls out of the aquarium, it needs to be promptly removed using wet hands and put back into the tank. It is advised to cover the aquarium to prevent such situations.

How goldfish reproduce

At one year old, a person reaches sexual maturity, and at three years old, they are ready to mate. Spring is when spawning happens most frequently. The emergence of a white growth on the males’ bodies, mostly on the gills, and the females’ increased size are characteristic indicators. Mature females release a unique secretion that draws attention from men. The male pursues the female throughout the tank as a sign of courtship. The actual procedure takes roughly six hours.

A healthy male and two females must be moved to a separate container intended for spawning before you can begin breeding.

The tank should have a minimum capacity of 20 to 30 liters and a temperature range of 22 to 24 degrees Celsius. Sand or gravel don’t need to be applied to the bottom. Continuous lighting of the tank is essential for reproduction. It is preferable to keep the living conditions in a spawning aquarium identical to those in a regular aquarium.

Slowly, ten to thirty eggs are laid by the pursued female, which the males fertilize with their semen. A single spawning can produce up to 3000 eggs.

The eggs are fastened to the tank’s walls or to plants. Fry shows up after a week. It is advised to feed them with a specialized fry power supply, available at pet stores.

A favorite because of their vivid colors and distinct personalities, goldfish are some of the most well-known and popular aquarium fish. They are an excellent option for novices because they are comparatively simple to maintain, but in order to flourish and maintain good health, they do need the right conditions, such as a roomy tank, clean water, and a balanced diet.

Feeding goldfish

It is preferable to feed using the "often and a little" principle. People should eat a balanced diet for growth and development, so using only natural food is advised. The life of the fish may be shortened by inadequate nutrition. Frozen and fresh food should be fed in rotation with dry food. Food that flake is thought to be the most practical. Fish can be fed a variety of foods:

  1. Fresh vegetables. Sometimes fish can be fed peas, carrots and spinach, after chopping the vegetables. Vegetables need to be scalded to soften (but do not boil!). You can also give algae.
  2. Frozen food. Can be of animal and vegetable origin. Buy in pet stores. Freezing helps rid the food of bacteria and preserve its beneficial properties for a long period.
  3. "Live" food. To obtain a sufficient amount of protein, it is recommended to give animal food to fish: rainworms, Artemy and Daphnia, and sometimes smaller fish.

Crushed and cooked grains such as rice, wheat, or buckwheat can be fed to fish. It only takes a pinch of food to satisfy one person.

There are a few key guidelines for feeding goldfish:

Moderation Goldfish tend to be gluttons, so you need to carefully calculate the amount of food so that the aquarium does not get clogged.
Overeating Systematic overeating can lead to illness and death of individuals. Veterinarians recommend having a "fasting day" once a month and not feeding the fish.
Balanced nutrition Some species need carbohydrates, not proteins, in these cases special nutrition is necessary. The food should be rich in vitamins.
Cleaning the aquarium Food leftovers can rot and poison the water, killing the fish, so you must not forget to clean the tank on time.
Timeliness Feeding should take place at the same time. This will help to avoid overeating, as well as accustom the fish to the owner.

After ten to fifteen minutes, you can remove food remnants from an aquarium containing slow-moving fish. The area of the aquarium where there is no plants or décor is where you should feed the fish. You should feed goldfish three times a day.

Compatibility with other fish and plants

The larger a fish is, the more docile it is toward other fish in its aquarium; the more timid it is toward smaller fish. Fish have the ability to hunt for small prey and consume them on occasion. It is not permitted to settle goldfish with any of the following people:

  • guppies;
  • swordtails;
  • rainbowfish;
  • catfish and botia;
  • labeo;
  • barbs;
  • astronotus;
  • laliuses.

If you intend to breed fish, you are not allowed to keep fish from different species and families in the same tank. Since goldfish are often gluttons, it is advised to include edible plants in the aquarium.

It is best to avoid placing any small items that the person could swallow. Fish scales should not be damaged by decorations with sharp edges. Certain species can live in aquariums that aren’t decorated.

How to distinguish a male from a female

Fish sex can be ascertained by looking for certain characteristics:

  1. Body. In females, it is mostly rounded and slightly swollen, while in males it is thin and elongated.
  2. The pectoral fins of males have "notches", while in females they are short and rounded.
  3. The gills of males have white growths that appear only during the spawning period.
  4. Females tend to be passive. Males are more active in the spring.
  5. The body color of females is brighter, but this feature is also not accurate, since males of some species have bright scales.
  6. The anus of females protrudes at the tail end and resembles a growth. In males, it is elongated.
  7. In most cases, there is a growth on the abdomen of the male that extends to the anus.

When the first spawning begins, sexual characteristics start to emerge.

Types of gold aquarium fish

People are separated into:

  • long-bodied;
  • short-bodied.

The most widely used fish species are:

Type Description
Common Orange or golden scales; sometimes there is a black and red with a shimmer. Small fins on the belly and back, a short tail. The length of the fish can reach 30 cm.
Comet The tail is wide and long. Color – red-silver or yellow. The shade "black velvet" is considered the rarest. Length – 20 centimeters.
Telescope Bright or monochromatic scales. The body is short, roundish. Cylindrical eyes are directed to the side or up.
Lionhead The body is spherical, there are growths on the head. Seals on the gills can grow and limit vision. No fin on the back. White and red scales are the most common color.
Tosakin A wide fan-shaped tail is a distinctive feature of the species. A large body slows down the fish very much.
Ranchu External features are the same as those of the lionhead. A characteristic feature of the species is a curved spine. Common colors are orange, black and mother-of-pearl.
Pearl Round body, convex scale plates on the back. The fish reaches 15 cm in length. The most common colors are white and orange.
Veiltail Spherical, sometimes egg-shaped body. Elongated fins. The tail is long, train-shaped, forked.

The selective goldfish species number in the hundreds.
