Azolla caroliniana

Azollaceae is the family Azolla. indigenous to North America.

  • In both tropical and subtropical climates, the plant is widespread. This fern creates stunning green islands that float on the water’s surface. Because of its fragility, the plant needs to be handled carefully. It is not very common among fish keepers. It grows in a clearly defined seasonal manner, going dormant in the winter.

The aquarium’s water temperature can change over a sizable range. The plant does well in water that is slightly warm—about 20 °C—as well as in a tropical aquarium, which is 28 °C. The plant stops growing when the temperature falls to 16 °C or lower; eventually, its leaves rot and it sinks into the water. In the spring, new plants are born from spores that have been preserved in the bottom silt.

Soft water with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction is ideal for azolla. Hardness should not exceed 10 °C, and pH should not be higher than 7.0.

The plant needs intense lighting. Incandescent and LB type fluorescent lamps can be used for artificial lighting. Fluorescent lights should have a minimum power of 2-2.5 W for every square meter of water surface area. There should be a minimum of twelve hours of daylight each day. An abundance of azolla should be routinely removed from the aquarium because, in ideal circumstances, it grows quickly and covers the entire surface, shading other plants.

As azolla usually dies in the winter when light levels drop, it is possible to rescue the plant if light levels are very high and the water is relatively warm.

Azolla is preserved in a different way during the winter. Take the plant out of the aquarium and put it in a bowl with some moist moss. You can use regular swamp moss sphagnum for this. It is recommended that the wintering temperature not exceed 12 °C. The plant needs to be moved into the aquarium by the end of March or early April.

Aquarium enthusiasts can benefit greatly from the small floating plant Azolla caroliniana, also called Carolina mosquito fern. This vivid, quick-growing fern not only gives any tank a lush, green touch, but it also absorbs excess nutrients and gives small fish and invertebrates a place to hide while it grows, which is essential for maintaining water quality. Easy to maintain and capable of contributing to a more balanced and healthy aquatic environment, Azolla caroliniana is a great choice for novices and seasoned hobbyists alike.
