Bolbitis heudelotii

Polypodiaceae family. extensively distributed across Asia and Africa.

Belongs to the class of higher ferns. looks amazing and works well as an aquarium decoration. Dense thickets are made of large, dark green leaves that have been cut. Under ideal circumstances, Bolbitis can grow to a height of 30 to 35 cm. It can be cultivated in any size aquarium; generally, it should be placed in the corners, in areas with low lighting, and on big stones or piles of rocks. The plant is fairly common and has earned its popularity among aquarists. It grows continuously throughout the year provided that the maintenance conditions are favorable. However, this plant grows slowly and has high maintenance requirements.

Bolbitis heudelotii feels satisfactory at various temperatures. This plant is quite suitable for both moderately warm and tropical aquariums. It grows best at a temperature of 22 – 26 ° C. When the water temperature drops to 20 ° C, growth slows down noticeably. At temperatures above 28 ° C and an insufficient amount of nutrients, it quickly becomes depleted. The plant does not tolerate hard water at all, for it to grow well, the water hardness should not exceed 4 °. The maximum permissible hardness is about 6 °. Bolbitis needs water with a slightly acidic reaction, in alkaline water its leaves quickly disintegrate. It is advisable to change the water regularly.

Bolbitis hedeloti does not care about the type of lighting. It does well under prolonged shade. Incandescent and fluorescent lamps, like LB, can be used for artificial lighting.

This plant prefers diffused natural light, but it needs protection from direct sunlight because it is terrified of green and blue-green algae overgrowth. There should be at least 12 hours of daylight.

It is possible to grow Bolbitis heudelotii without soil. Due to its extreme density, this plant sinks to the bottom of the water. Its roots, rhizoids, readily enfold like a net around even the smallest irregularities in the stones that are placed beneath it. It is crucial that the aquarium’s bottom contain a large amount of silt for the plant. When there is a shortage of organic matter at the bottom and the water temperature is high, mineral supplementation is crucial.

It is important for aquarists to keep in mind that Bolbitis Heudelotii dislikes too much sodium in their water. As a result, you should only add table salt and baking soda to the aquarium in very small amounts (up to 1%, or 1 g per 1 liter of water) and only if absolutely necessary. Mineral fertilizers ought to be used sparingly and on a regular basis. Trace elements are required to be present. One to two grams of complex mineral fertilizers should be added each week for every 100 liters of water.

The rhizome of Bolbitis hedeloti is propagated by splitting it into several sections, each of which should have a growth point and at least three robust leaves. Never bury the rhizome in the ground; instead, use a pebble to press the plant’s divided sections to the bottom. It is not possible to observe spore reproduction in aquarium settings.

Preserving the plant from fouling and causing as little disturbance as possible are essential for its proper development.
