Habitat
South America is Corridoras’ home continent. Catfish can be found in Ecuador’s and Peru’s clean rivers in their natural habitat. Sand bottoms and gentle currents are what fish like.
The dense thickets of aquatic plants that surround the corydoras and provide cover are a necessary condition. Catfish travel constantly in groups and actively explore the bottom. The fish would rather sit in shelters when they are in danger.
Characteristics of the fish
- Body. Corydoras have a fairly dense, elongated body, slightly compressed on the sides. High back. There are horny scales on the body, which serve as protection. The eyes are large, the mouth is lower. There are also three pairs of antennae.
- Fins. The fins are whitish-yellow, translucent. There is a black spot on the dorsal fin. The adipose fin is clearly visible.
- Color. The main color of the body is light beige or slightly pinkish. There are three black spots on each side – on the head, dorsal fin and closer to the tail.
Differences between male and female
Females are larger than males, reaching a maximum size of 5.5 centimeters. Their waistlines are also more rounded. Dorsal fins on males are more pointed.
Since panda corydoras do not do well in isolation, it is imperative to house catfish in groups of six to ten. Individuals exhibit more interesting behavior in larger groups within the school.
- Aquarium. For a group of 4-6 fish, an aquarium with a volume of at least 40 liters is required. This is provided that the catfish are kept in a species aquarium without neighbors. If there are neighbors, the volume must be increased. The shape can be rectangular or square.
- Soil. Must be soft, without sharp particles that can injure the fish. This can be sand, small pebbles or gravel. To emphasize the beauty and natural color of catfish, give preference to dark-colored soil.
- Aeration, filtration, lighting. Aeration and filtration are a must for catfish. The power of the equipment is always selected individually, based on the volume of the aquarium. There is no need for additional lighting. Usually, lamps are installed for plants, not for corydoras. The optimal solution would be lamps with the ability to adjust the brightness of the lighting.
- Plants, decor. Shelters are necessarily installed at the bottom, in which catfish can rest and hide. As for plants, there should be a lot of them. The best solution would be species with large leaves that provide good shade. They are planted along the walls of the aquarium, leaving the center free.
Regular maintenance is required for aquariums. Weekly, one-third of the water must be changed. The filter must also be quickly cleaned, and any food residue from the bottom must be removed. Seven to ten days after the aquarium is launched and plants are planted, corydoras can be released into it.
Feeding
Pandas eat anything and everything without fuss. For catfish that sink to the bottom, specialized tablets and granules are the best option. Corydoras frequently consume leftover food that is meant for other fish.
You can add fresh veggies to the menu to vary the diet:
Periodically, offer protein-rich foods:
Feeding ought to be done in the evening once a day. The appetite and unique qualities of each fish determine the appropriate portion size. Food scraps must be removed from the bottom of the aquarium immediately because they will contaminate it. Food should therefore be given in small portions.
Reproduction at home
There are subtle differences in home corydora breeding. However, having children is a very real task if all goes according to plan.
Choosing producers. Catfish are capable of reproduction at the age of 8-10 months. These should be healthy and strong fish without any deviations. There should be 2-3 males per female.
- Preparing a spawning tank. A 30-liter aquarium is suitable for this purpose. It is also equipped with aeration and a filter. The water temperature should be maintained within +20-26 degrees. Be sure to plant aquatic plants. In one corner, it is necessary to create an area with sufficiently bright lighting. Here the female will lay eggs.
- Stimulation. A female and 2-3 males are planted in a prepared container. The fish are fed abundantly with protein food. Then the water temperature is lowered by 1-2 degrees. If the fish are ready to reproduce, then spawning occurs within the next 24 hours. A female can lay up to 70 eggs at a time.
- Caring for the fry. After spawning is complete, the parents are immediately returned to their place. The fry hatch in about 6-10 days. They are fed zooplankton or specialized feeds. They grow quickly and after 8-10 months they themselves can become parents.
