Family Alismataceae. Homeland: the Amazon River basin in South America.
"Amazon" is the common name for one of the most prevalent plants. It is remarkably striking while remaining extremely modest. forms a thick rosette of long, narrow, vivid green leaves. Big specimens take up a considerable amount of space and grow to a height of 35–40 cm. Echinodorus, however, can live in a very tiny space. grows uniformly all year long.
This kind of Echinodorus works well in any kind of aquarium. Echinodorus amazonicus can grow satisfactorily in water between 16 and 28 °C, although it is not worth keeping this plant in a cold aquarium all the time. Water hardness likewise varies greatly. This genus representative grows exceptionally well in both alkaline and slightly acidic water, in contrast to the majority of Echinodoruses. prefers new water that is changed frequently.
The "Amazon" doesn’t require much lighting. tolerates extended shade, although the leaves’ color fading occurs. The type of lighting has no bearing on anything. If the aquarium is situated against the side wall close to the window, the plant might receive adequate natural light.
Fluorescent or incandescent lights are excellent choices for artificial lighting. Although Echinodorus can be kept in low light conditions (fluorescent lamps have a power of 0.25 W per liter of water), the plant grows more effectively in brighter light. The length of daylight hours ought to be approximately twelve hours.
The soil ought to be either moderately or well-stained, and highly fertile. Natural soil siltation usually provides enough energy for plants. There is no discernible impact of the substrate’s nature on the plant’s growth. It requires a fairly thick layer of soil, between 5 and 7 cm, due to its strongly developed root system.
Typically, Echinodorus doesn’t require a specific mineral diet. It occasionally exhibits symptoms of mineral starvation in extremely soft water. In this situation, the plant can be fed complex mineral fertilizers; just make sure to periodically add 1–2 g of microelements in small doses of water per 100 liters.
Echinodorus amazonicus almost exclusively reproduces vegetatively in aquariums. Underwater, the plant produces peduncles that support the growth of numerous daughter plants. The daughter plants can be divided and moved to a different location once a rosette of leaves and a root system have formed.
Novice aquarists can recommend this plant because it is highly resistant to maintenance conditions and low maintenance requirements. It actively participates in the cycle of substances and flawlessly sets up the aquarium for the addition of much more demanding plants, preserving the biological equilibrium in the reservoir.
