Family Alismataceae. In South America, echinodorus of this kind is common.
Because of its adaptability to many environments and relative lack of flair, this plant is highly prized by aquarists across the nation. Large, dense bush with elongated, bright green lanceolate leaves. The plant grows to a height of 40 to 50 cm in an aquarium, so it should be positioned in the background and in the middle. It is important to remember that even the most shade-tolerant plants struggle to thrive in the shadow of the Echinodorus bleheri bush because of its dense growth. Due to their substantial sizes, adult echinodorus should be housed in large containers.
The temperature of the water in which the echinodorus is contained can fluctuate within a fairly wide range. The plant develops satisfactorily both in a cold and in a tropical aquarium, at a temperature of 28 ° C. If Echinodorus grows in a tropical aquarium, it is very useful to arrange a "winter" for it twice a year, lowering the water temperature for 1.5 – 2 months to 20 – 22 ° C. The plant prefers water with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction, but can grow quite well for a long time in an acidic environment at a pH of up to 5.5 and even less. Water hardness can fluctuate significantly, Echinodorus grows well in both very soft and relatively hard water. It is advisable to change the water periodically – at least three times a month from 1/5 of the aquarium volume and more.
Both mild and intense lighting are possible. Echinodorus is resistant to prolonged shade. This plant receives adequate natural light if the aquarium is placed close to a window. You can use both incandescent and fluorescent lamps for artificial lighting.
LD lamps can also be used for lighting in addition to LB fluorescent lamps; however, they should only be used in conjunction with LB lamps, incandescent lamps, or natural daylight. The lighting fixtures’ minimum power can be determined using the following ratio: 0.25 W for fluorescent lamps and 0.75 W for incandescent lamps per liter. This indicates that the power of the fixtures can be moderate. At least eight hours, but ideally ten or twelve, should be spent in daylight.
The nature of the soil is not subject to any particular requirements from Echinodorus. It thrives in soil that is both heavily and slightly silted. It is best to place a lump of clay or a clay-peat mixture beneath the plant’s roots when planting in new soil. In this instance, it grows considerably more quickly in its new location. It is preferable to use other soil with appropriate particle sizes as a substrate, or small to medium-sized pebbles.
In aquarium settings, Echinodorus reproduces exclusively vegetatively. Numerous daughter plants emerge from the mother plant’s one or more extremely long shoots. The young plants can be separated from the mother runner and planted in the ground once they have three to four leaves and three to four roots. If the resulting runner is immediately staked to the ground with pins, young plants will grow more quickly. Unlike some other species, the formation of many daughter plants does not hinder the growth of the parent bush.
Because the runner is so fragile, you have to be very careful when separating the daughter plants from the runner. In the event that it unintentionally breaks off and leaves very small daughter plants on it, the fragment should be pressed with glass pins or pebbles, placed in a different container with low water, or exposed to bright light. In this way, weak, small plants that are still on the mustache can be saved, but they grow slowly.
