Description of the plant
One member of the roughly 260 species that make up the genus Bolotnitsa is Eleocharis. In aquariums, many of them are successfully grown. Although it is considered a full-fledged weed from a biological perspective, it is actively utilized in the construction of aquascapes.
It was no accident that Sitnyag Igolchataya appeared as an alternate name. This plant has narrow stems that resemble needles "in place" of its leaves.
In Russia, there are two common varieties:
- Sitnyag Igolchataya. Tall grass with sharp stems reaching 15 cm in length. The plant prefers damp places and meadows. Blooms periodically, but the flowers do not have decorative qualities.
- Sitnyag Tiny. This crop has many subspecies, growing almost all over the globe, with the exception of cold continents and the northern part of South America. Stems reach 10 cm in height.
Regarding the characteristics of care, these species are not dissimilar.
- Stems are hard, slender, in the form of needles, light green in color with a brown end at the top.
- Rhizome is weak, branched, filiform.
- Spikelets are small, elliptical.
- Flowers are bisexual, arranged in a spiral.
- Fruit is white, round.
This plant can grow up to 45 cm tall. It blooms in the natural world from June to October. Identical in appearance to Eleocharis Parvula, but with a shorter stem.
Spread area
Eleocharis is found practically everywhere. Sitnyag is commonly found in Australia, Asia, and North Africa. It grows best in natural habitats near lakes, rivers, ditches, and swamps, where it leaves an emerald carpet of soil behind.
Growing and care
Breeding the plant is not difficult.
Controlling its spread is one of the biggest issues aquarists face. It can even get past barriers buried in the ground.
- It should be planted in an aquarium with a medium or large area.
- A low water level is preferable. In other conditions, Eleocharis may stop developing.
- The plant takes a long time to get used to a new place.
- Since the sedge has seasonal growth, a cold aquarium is more suitable for it.
- This weed reproduces very quickly, so it needs a seasonal "haircut". You can cut the stems at the root, which contributes to the formation of more squat bushes. Or use the thinning method with vertically positioned scissors.
- To prevent this crop from becoming overgrown with algae, you need to regularly change the water and clean the soil from organic matter.
It is best to position the Tiny Sedge in the foreground and the Needle Sedge in the background. It effectively takes the place of long-stemmed crops in small tanks, providing shade for the grass tank’s rear wall. It can be planted in the middle of large tanks. The plant is appropriate for procreating as well.
Optimal water parameters
Clean water aquariums are Eleocharis’ favorite.
Suggested hydrochemical parameters:
-
general hardness – up to 14 ° dH.
Sedge is comfortable down to 14 °C because it can withstand the cold well. But it can perish in hot weather.
Lighting requirements
Eleocharis dislikes exposure to direct sunlight and grows well in both artificial and natural light. The best light is diffused light. In any other case, algae will absorb it.
Using incandescent lights is not recommended. Side lighting and fluorescent fixtures would be the best choice. Maximum power is 0.5 W/l, and up to 14 hours of daylight are advised.
Soil quality
Poor quality soil is not conducive to the growth of Eleocharis. Ideally, you should buy a fine-grain gravel and sand mixture and spread it out in a 3 cm layer.
Need for feeding
Mineral fertilizers are not needed because Sitnyag gets all the nutrients it needs from water and silted soil.
Features of reproduction
Soil layers that form close to the mother stem are how the plant reproduces. This procedure is comparable to fern growth.
It is preferable to store the shoots in a reservoir with low water since they don’t take root right away. By taking this action, young shoots will be able to take root in the soil and form rhizomes more quickly.
Subsequently, small groups of the young plants are planted in the soil, with a 2 cm depth of substrate immersion. The stems should then be cut to a length of 3 cm. Eleocharis has a lengthy acclimatization period, which will help new shoots emerge more quickly.
Variations of the name
Eleocharis (Sitnyag Igolchataya) is also referred to as Bolotnitsa Igolchataya in the aquarist community.
