Distribution
In the Vietnamese province of Thanh Hoa, Eriocaulon sp. Vietnam was discovered. This was later reflected in the plant’s name. It is currently not very well-liked throughout Europe.
Growing and care
Comparing Eriocaulon sp. Vietnam to other members of the Eriocaulon family, it is thought to require less care. Growing is still quite challenging, though. On the other hand, the likelihood of witnessing the plant’s flowering process rises when one pays attention to the conditions of the aquarium in which it is kept.
Any size aquarium can use Eriocaulon Vietnam. It can be paired with artificial decorations, driftwood, and other ornamental plants. Even though Eriocaulon bushes look good alone, they are often planted in groups of three to five.
Water parameters for ideal maintenance
The ideal environment for this plant to grow in is an aquarium that mimics tropical weather. It is imperative to uphold the subsequent water parameters:
-
temperature corridor from 24ºС to 30ºС;
-
water hardness percentage (dH) – from 2 to 12 German degrees;
-
acidity (pH) – from 5.3 to 6.5.
It will also be necessary to plan for improved water filtration and CO2 enrichment on a systematic basis. A third of the aquarium’s water should be replaced with fresh each week.
Lighting requirements
A plant that resembles a hedgehog is highly sensitive to light levels. One W/l is thought to be the ideal lighting level. Eriocaulon can survive, if needed, in a shaded aquarium, but only temporarily.
If not, the plant will become ill. Excessive lighting can also be detrimental because it encourages the growth and development of algae, which can kill off members of the Eriocaulon family.
Soil and nutrient substrate requirements
A minimum of five centimeters of soil are needed for ericaulon. You can get Malaya nutrient soil from the ADA Aqua Soil series for an aquarium with this plant.
It is unique in that it is yellow in color, has less organic matter than other products in the line, and is used to replicate the conditions found in Southeast Asian jungles, the natural habitat of Eriocaulon sp. Vietnam.
To keep the needle rosette from floating to the top when planting eriocaulon for the first time, it’s crucial to firmly anchor it to the ground. The plant will soon wither away if its leaves come into contact with the air.
Demanding of fertilizers
Eriocaulon needs to be fed consistently with fertilizers that contain both macro- and microelements in order to ensure normal development. It should be noted, though, that members of the Eriocaulon family do not respond well to fertilizers containing salt.
Salts of calcium and magnesium are used in some recipes for making natural fertilizers. The plant absorbs them in large enough amounts from aquarium water.
Concentrating on industrially produced professional fertilizers that contain iron, manganese, copper, boron, zinc, potassium, etc. is preferable.
Eriocaulon’s well-developed root system provides the plants with the majority of their nutrition. They work well with solid fertilizers that come in the form of granules, tablets, or capsules that are inserted into the substrate using tweezers.
The solid fertilizer’s nutrients gradually dissolve in water to supply the macro- and microelements required by the bush plant. On the market, the following fertilizers are well-liked:
Fertilizer Ball for Ista Water Plant They don’t contain phosphates or nitrates, which keeps the aquarium’s water’s acid-base balance and hardness constant. However, there are sufficient microelements to sustain plants all year round. The fertilizer promotes plant growth and maintains the right amount of chlorophyll, as the manufacturer claims.
Tetra Crypto tablets are mainly meant for novice users whose aquariums may contain too much phosphates and nitrites. The solid fertilizer only contains microelements as a result.
Reproduction
Vietnamese eriocaulon is spread through cuttings. The whiskers’ ends sprout tiny little bushes. When tiny roots start to show, they can be separated from the parent rosette of the plant and moved to different locations. It reproduces rapidly in favorable conditions; in a month, up to 50 daughter bushes may form.
Increase the lighting’s brightness and change the aquarium’s water two to three times a week to encourage the growth of new bushes.
Aquarists have observed that Eriocaulon sp. Vietnam eventually forms a dense clump of bushes that resembles a hummock.
Plant variations or other forms
There is no official record of Eriocaulon sp. Vietnam in scientific literature. It is primarily of a commercial nature and also indicates the plant’s origin.
Aquarists speculate that this kind of eriocaulon is a variant of Eriocaulon parviflorum.
But compared to its Vietnamese "relative," the conditions for retaining the latter are far more stringent. Eriocaulon sp. Vietnam shares physical characteristics with Eriocaulon sp. Goias, another member of the family.
