Description

Megalobulimus is a land snail, whose homeland is humid tropical forests. For its impressive size and unusual appearance, this mollusk is called royal. In natural conditions, the size of the shell of this mollusk is 6 – 7 cm, and in home terrariums it can reach 8.5 cm. At the request of megasa snails photo, you can see that their "houses" have a conical shape with a pronounced volume of the last turn, turning into a fairly wide mouth. Young megas usually have a uniform, brown shell color, but then age-related changes occur and it becomes light, matte. With age, the design of the snail shell also changes. The outer edge of its mouth, the lip, begins to thicken and curl. In this case, it can have a pink or crimson color. The columella is usually pink. The color of the body of an adult mollusk can be different: from light, beige, to dark, gray. It can change with age, becoming more intense. The body size of megalobulimus oblongus is quite large, but at the same time it is quite flat and soft, with a gelatinous structure. Although the area of the sole of the megas is much larger than that of other land gastropods, the amount of mucus secreted by its glands is relatively small. In addition to the lower tentacles, this snail also has a kind of "fan" located on the edge of the leg near the mouth opening. These tentacles are connected to each other with the help of membranes. But each of them can move independently, regardless of the others. With the help of this organ, the mollusk is able to recognize objects, smell and even collect drops of water during rain. The megalobulimus snail is a long-liver among land mollusks. On average, its life expectancy is 15 years.

Habitat

The tropical forest is the natural habitat that the megas snail has selected. It’s assumed that these mollusks inhabit the Caribbean in addition to Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay. Some sources claim that the Lesser Antilles, Barbados, and Jamaica region is home to them.

Mollusks live their entire lives on the ground. They hardly ever scale stones and low trees to get on their branches. Megasnails seek refuge in the moist forest litter or underground burrows during dry and hot weather. These mollusks have a seasonality in the wild. When the weather is warm and muggy, from January to March, they are active. Additionally, during the cold, dry months of March through January, the mollusks become lethargic and briefly hibernate.

Features of behavior

Unlike the same Achatina, megas have a more upbeat attitude and are more active during the day. If they are content with their living conditions, they will even crawl around the terrarium. Yet, they frequently slumber for two or three days. The majority of adult mollusks’ lives are spent underground, where they frequently burrow. The megalobulimus snail is a gregarious and curious animal. It is fearless and adapts to human hands and a new environment quickly. Furthermore, these mollusks are not very picky about their living conditions and have a good appetite.

Conditions of detention

Having megasnails is comparable to having achatinas. For your pets, you should select a terrarium with a volume of 10 liters per snail. Here, the larger the mollusks’ dwelling, the better. In this instance, low horizontal containers are preferred. It is crucial that the container’s bottom area be as big as possible. A snag of some sort on the container’s bottom would be a nice touch. The megas will "train" their leg muscles with its assistance. For snails older than four months, a shallow bath is provided. In it, smaller mollusks can drown.

The soil should be light and fairly loose so that the snail can easily burrow into it. It can consist of a mixture of coconut substrate, moss and oak litter. Moss hummocks are a good addition to the bedding. But everything that the snail will subsequently come into contact with must be treated accordingly. It is very important to monitor the condition of the soil: loosen it and keep it clean. It is laid in a layer of at least 5 cm, but the thicker the layer, the better. The temperature in the terrarium with young megas should be within +26C – +28C. More adults are suitable for +24C – +25C, but during the masonry of eggs and the incubation period should be warmer. At night, it is advisable to reduce the temperature by a couple of degrees, which will correspond to the natural conditions. Air humidity should not be below 70 – 80%. In its natural habitat, the snail Megalobulimus Oblongus is hiding from natural enemies among the roots of trees and shrubs. Moreover, she often falls into short -term hibernation for 2 – 4 days. Mollusk wakes up from hunger or feeling the approach of rain. Such features of behavior in nature should be taken into account when maintaining it in captivity. You should not disturb the snail if she decided to “take a nap” for several days, as well as forcibly bathe, feed, etc. D.

For aquarium enthusiasts, megas snails are an unusual and lesser-known option that present an intriguing contrast to more typical pets. These snails are unique not only because of their enormous size but also because of their fascinating behaviors and particular needs. This post will discuss the unique qualities of Megas snails and the extra care required to maintain their health in your aquarium, as well as why they’re such uncommon and unique pets.

Nutrition

  • crushed carrots,
  • pumpkin,
  • thinly chopped fresh cucumber or zucchini.

Mollusks require grass and green leaves above all else. Megas can be served ripe, soft pears, apricots, or peaches "for dessert."

Adding calcined additives to the diet is essential. However, lump cuttlefish should not be used because snails gnaw on it infrequently because of its hard structure. Any combination needs to be ground into a powder.

Supplementing megalobulimus with protein is equally important. These include daphnia, gammarus, ground cereals, and special kinds of food for fish that consume plants. One pinch of such an additive is sufficient for each adult snail; a larger amount should be avoided.

Though the Megas snail has a voracious appetite, you shouldn’t continuously give it food. The mollusk will determine what it wants to eat and when.

Reproduction

Megalobulimus oblongus snails are hermaphrodites, although self-fertilization is uncommon in them. It is thought that a significant amount of foam is released during their mating ritual.

Typically, an oval-shaped clutch of one to three white eggs is present. They have a diameter of 0.8 to 1 cm and a maximum length of 2 cm.

A flashlight can be used to illuminate the thin translucent shell. After that, it will be feasible to keep an eye on the embryo’s development, which takes place during its 4- to 5-week incubation period at a temperature between +27 and +29 degrees Celsius.

An adult of this mollusk can lay up to 25 eggs at short intervals throughout the year. The enlarged mantle lets you know that a pregnancy has taken place.

These snails are much more valuable to snail breeders than the same Achatina because they frequently lay empty eggs when kept in captivity.

Moulting

The Megas snail starts its moulting process concurrently with its lip’s extension. The shell starts to rapidly peel off a month after it first starts to actively enlarge.
