Habitat and Range

Described and known only from a single location, a stream on Muna Island, Southeast Sulawesi (Tenghara Province), Indonesia known as "Mata air Fotuno," though it may have a broader range of distribution.

For this genus, Sulawesi is a unique/specific center of diversity/diversity, as there are currently 17 endemic (exclusive to a given area) species of Oryzias described.

Resides in a karst freshwater stream that is 80 percent covered in forest and has a mud and sand substrate with occasional fallen leaves. PH varies from 6.0 to 7.0.

Because of its vivid red and blue colors, Oryzias woworae, also called the Daisy’s Ricefish, is a small, colorful freshwater species that has become more and more popular among aquarium enthusiasts. This fish is a great option for both novice and expert aquarists because it is not only aesthetically pleasing but also resilient and simple to care for. We’ll look at Oryzias woworae’s natural habitat, maintenance needs, and breeding habits in this post to help you set up the ideal home for these interesting fish.

Description

From the sides, the body is flattened and extended. Additionally flattened are the head and the front portion of the back. The pectoral fins are high and a small dorsal fin is pushed back.

The Oryzias’s body shimmers a gray-lilac color and is translucent. The neon Oryzias fish is named for its unique ability to release a glow when struck by reflected light rays. The pectoral fins and the abdomen beneath are both reddish in color. The caudal fin has a red edge around it.

Compared to females, adult males have longer fins with pointed rays, are significantly brighter and more colorful, and have a more slender body type.

Male anal fins form a short tube known as gonopodia, whereas female anal fins are double-pounded.

Size

It is not the smallest species in the genus, but it is the smallest known from Sulawesi, with a maximum size of 25–30 mm.

Aquarium

In a school, rice fish in an aquarium measuring at least 45 by 30 cm (35 liters) feel more at ease and self-assured.

It is well suited and doesn’t require any special interior decor, though it does tend to lose color in an aquarium with minimal décor.

Looks best in an aquarium set up to mimic a natural habitat, with a sandy substrate, tree branches and roots, and a few handfuls of fallen leaves added for good measure.

Together with the adults, the fry have a better chance of surviving in a planted aquarium, which is also appropriate.

Water parameters:

23–27 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, and 5–15 °Hardness.

Installing a filter, an aerator, and changing the water’s fourth part once a week are required.

Behavior and Compatibility

Despite their peaceful nature and ability to get along with fish of a similar size and disposition, these fish are too small to be a great addition to most communities.

Micro Rasboras, Eight-banded Glass Barbs (Eirmotus octozona), Rasboras, small Rainbowfish species, dwarf Corydoras, and small Loricariids like Otocinclus are the best choices if you want to keep them with other miniature fish species. Freshwater shrimp from the genera Caridina and Neocaridina are also good to keep together.

The Vorora should ideally be kept by itself if you plan to breed it; we do not advise keeping it with other Oryzias species because of the risk of hybridization.

These fish are not aggressive toward other fish; harmless skirmishes occasionally occur between males during courtship. When eight or more members of the same species are gathered together, they appear most impressive and exhibit more self-assured behavior.

Feeding

All food kinds are accepted at Neon Oryzias, but they must be the right size.

For adult oryzias, a mixture of finely ground or crushed dried food and live or frozen brine shrimp, cyclops, tubifex, or something similar is ideal. You should also add food that contains algae components.

A vibrant and captivating addition to any freshwater aquarium is Oryzias woworae. They are a great option for aquarists of all skill levels due to their striking appearance and serene nature.

As long as you keep your tankmates appropriate and the water clean, these fish are not too difficult to care for. They flourish in tanks that are lushly planted and have lots of swimming room, allowing them to exhibit their brilliant colors and instinctive behaviors.

Oryzias woworae is a great choice if you’re looking to add a distinctive and energetic species to your tank. They will add years of beauty and life to your aquarium with proper care.
